May marks the last of our Artist of the Month series until October 2012, with a very special event.

 “Win” Wendy Hopkins Hammer

“When God Closes A Door, He Opens A Window”

Wendy “Win” Hammer is an intellectually (mentally) challenged(from birth) adult. She has rapidly become known as a rising star in the world of folk art.

Her works are already owned by several of the renowned Highwaymen artist, including R.L. Lewis Jr., James Gibson, and Robert Butler. Peter Loose, the respected folk artist, is also a collector of “Win’s” work and President Jimmy Carter is the proud owner of two of her original paintings.

“Win” is the youngest daughter of Bill (from Lynchburg, Va.) and Carolyn (from Tarpon Springs, Fl) Hammer, born in Saint Petersburg, Florida on May 21st, 1960. She is extremely proud of her southern heritage and of being a Floridian.

Creativity as well as public service runs in the family. Her father was a civil servant and her mother a nurse. There are military, farmers, ministers, newspapermen, a fire chief, and a senator in the family. Her great uncle, Walter Hammer, was a luthier (violin and bow maker), and her paternal grandmother, Mary Frances Robinson Hammer, was a shoe designer.

“Win” chose her nickname as a young child, when as a fan of wrestling with aspirations to become wrestler, she dubbed herself “Win” Champion. She is still prone to apply her well-practiced holds her sister and best friend Milli (Millicent). “Win” began painting, at the suggestion of her sister, after the death of their parents as way of dealing with her grief. Bill and Carolyn Hammer died ten days apart in September 2005, just four months short of their 56th wedding anniversary. You will find pairs of swans in many of her paintings, just like her mom and dad, swans pair for life.

“Win” enjoyed painting side by side with Lucy, the family cat, until March 2011. Lucy had along life of 17 years and was well loved by all. She took care of “Win” and could always be found at her side or in her lap.

“Win’s” paintings are colorful, joyous, make you smile, and will touch your heart. Art is healing her grief, returning joy to her life, and leveling the playing field for “Win”.

Her favorite sayings are:

“I am just being MYSELF”

“Everyone has their own way of doing things”

and

“When God Closes A Door, He Opens A Window”

Invites you to meet

Fred “Dorian” Spinks

April’s Artist of the Month

Saturday, April 21st, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, “Dorian” will be in the gallery to answer your questions and show you his unique works. Dorian’s own words provide
an insight to his motivation and inspiration.

“To introduce my self I am Fred Spinks and I sign all of my artworks as Dorian. I grew up in the Clearwater, Fl. Area and traveled and lived in Arizona and Colorado. I have studied watercolors, hand made paper and casting from many colleges and artists. Much of what I have learned is from trial and error but it has opened a lot of other ways to achieve my unique achievements and artistic developments. When a watercolor didn’t work out, I shredded them and used them to make paper and cast them.

A lot of my work has been influenced by my contact with the Native Americans People. Their culture and ideals influenced me as a child and continues to this day. The most amazing part is their ceremonial dances and ancestral traditions. I have been exposed to many different clans and beliefs. The most fascinating people being the Hopi tribe in the desert country north of The Grand Canyon, they survive in the most primitive environment in the high desert. Their homes are hundreds of years old and are still set in their passed down traditions, no electricity or running water. The sad part is their new generations are being drawn away by the electronic world and they get caught up in the decision to be part of it or continue their clan affiliations and ancient ways.

My art works are usually not the most beautiful or commercially acceptable but they all have a hidden meaning that will affect the viewer. I like to use petroglyphs and ancient symbols in most of my work to trigger the viewer to a memory or dream that is buried in their mind. Hopefully my work brings it forward and they have a visual flashback to experience it again.

I have taught art in several Art Centers, Community Colleges and Co-Op’s and displayed shows in several galleries in Arizona and Colorado, as well as being the Founding Father of “The Mountain Artists Gallery “ in Nederland, Colorado. I hope to bring a change of pace and a new art experience you will enjoy and appreciate.”

The gallery is located in downtown Dade City at 14125 7th Street, across from Dade City’s Historic Courthouse Square. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-4pm or by appointment. For additional information, please contact:
